MOT Your Home
DEEHS research has revealed that homeowners are risking their lives by not getting their electrics fully checked, leaving potentially deadly faults, and electrocution and fire hazards in thousands of homes!!!
Our survey revealed that:
90% of those surveyed stated they had never had their electrics checked
99% of people do not use qualified electricians when carrying out electrical work
90% of those surveyed did not know that their electrics should be checked at least every 3 years
That’s why DEEHS has launched ‘MOT Your Home’, a national consumer safety campaign warning homeowners about the dangers of using unqualified electricians. Fronted by our electrical experts, the new campaign encourages homeowners whose property is over 5 years old to employ DEEHS services to carry out Electrical Audit/Electrical installation Condition Report, which acts like an MOT for your property.
Child Electrical Safety
DEEHS advises parents that after a bath or shower, you should make sure your children are dried off thoroughly before they go anywhere near electrical things like games consoles -water and electricity can be deadly. This also means not letting your kids run straight from the paddling pool into the house where there are plugs, sockets and switches. Get them dry first.
Keep drinks away from TVs, DVD players, stereos, speakers, computers, games consoles and anything else electrical.
Turning off electric games and appliances when they’re not in use is a good habit to get into. It is not only safer, but saves you money and is kinder to the environment. There are many potential electrical hazards in the garden. For example, lawn mowers and hedge cutters can cut through their own electric cables, causing a risk of electric shock. It’s important to be vigilant at all times, especially if young children are nearby.
Jobs for the Girls
DEEHS research reveals that many women would think twice before calling in a male electrician to carry out electrical work in their home. As a result of this survey, DEEHS has launched a new Apprentice Academy encouraging and motivating more women into a traditionally male dominated industry.
According to the survey of 3,000 women by DEEHS nearly half (47%) of female homeowners admitted that they would be scared when having to deal with a male electrician while 11% confess that they’ll only have a male electrician carrying out electrical work in their home if someone else is around.
In addition to this there is a huge number of women looking towards taking on a trade over a profession. Also, 63% of 16-24 year old women surveyed said they are more interested in learning a skilled trade rather than a profession, because a trade stays with them for life.
